Red Rogue
Red Rogue

Red Rogue Review Red Rogue is a free to play 2D side scrolling video game. Its design is not too dissimilar to the old games that were released back in the ‘80s when the original Nintendo console reigned supreme. If you are used to seeing realistic looking graphics with high production values, Red Rogue might be a hard game for you to get used to. However, old school gamers will see a lot of entertainment value here in this game. You play a character by the name of Red and she is a widow of Rogue who starred in the original game. Rogue has led Red to the “Chaos Dungeon” and he wants Red to revive him. To do this, she will have to find the Balrog that killed him and take back the amulet of Yendor. This amulet is Red’s only hope of restoring her husband back to life. When you choose a new game, there are two modes you can play the game in. The first is to play the game in the traditional “Action-RPG” style, or you can play in “Dogmatic”. The dogmatic style allows you to play the game without time actually passing unless you take action. I did not find too many differences in gameplay playing both modes since Red Rogue is still a very hard game to play no matter what you do. First things first, the controls are pretty simplistic and are explained to you at the very beginning of the video game. All you need to remember is use the directional buttons to move from left to right, and use the up and down buttons to enter inside new dungeons. Alternatively, you can use the W,A,S,D buttons too if you find that more comfortable. You can also press the space bar button that will open up the menu so you can use items and/or skills you have obtained. The most interesting aspect I found about Red Rogue is its unique combat system. All you have to do to attack enemies in this game is by simply walking up to them. Your character will simply auto-attack enemies and they will explode in a pool of red blood. It’s quite humorous to see at first, although not all enemies are that easy to dispose of. Some enemies get tougher and can withstand more attacks. This is where the skills and other items you obtain during the game become very helpful to you. Red is not alone in her quest to revive her husband Rogue. She has alongside with her a pet as well. This pet looks like a skeleton of some kind and helps you out in defeating the many scary enemies that reside inside the dark Chaos Dungeons. He’s helpful to tag along with, although he too has a lifebar and is vulnerable to all enemy attacks as well. If you don’t replenish his health bar, he will die and you will be left alone to fend for yourself. I have to say; it’s much easier having him tag along as playing this game as Red all by herself becomes a very hard task to accomplish. To help you along your journey, you can find treasure chests and other goodies that contain a ton of helpful items you can collect. This includes the likes of weapons, armor, health packs and runes. You can opt to give certain armor, health packs and weapons to your “pet” as well if you’re feeling kind enough. Obviously certain armor and weapons that you obtain will make fighting some of the tougher enemies in the game a lot easier to defeat. I remember fighting some enemies without any useful equipment and died pretty easily. Once I restarted the game again, I found some useful items and became stronger and was a better fighter. One thing that might prevent some people from enjoying this game to its full potential is that it’s very hard. There are over 20 dungeons that you have to explore and the level design is like an elaborate maze. It reminds me a lot of the older Castlevania games where you had to explore every inch of the level to find where you needed to go to next. There’s no map or waypoint guiding you at every step and some people may find this daunting at first. Another thing that may scare some gamers is that death is permanent in this game. If you die once, there is no checkpoint that allows you to restart at the point of your demise. No, you will have to start the whole game all over again when you die... Visually, Red Rogue has very simplistic graphics. As aforementioned at the start of this review, the graphics are something you may have found on an original Nintendo console back in the ‘80s. Its black and white presentation is effective and the pixelated blood that splashes all over the screen when you kill enemies is always a joy to watch as well. The eerie music that plays in the background too adds to the game’s scary-like atmosphere. If you are a gamer that was into old-school games like Castlevania and Prince of Persia, you will love the complexity and gameplay difficulty that Red Rogue offers. It’s one of those games that force you to explore each and every corner of each level and to only engage in combat whenever you can. Dungeon crawler style games were more common back in the ‘80s and ‘90s and this game aims to replicate that era in gaming. Casual gamers may find the game too hard to play and may not enjoy it as much as older gamers. Still, if you’re looking for a game that challenges your brain, this is a game you should play. Instructions: Cursor keys or W,A,S,D to move. Space bar to toggle menu. Actions assigned to hotkeys are visible in the menu – you can set additional hotkeys within the menu.

Skinwalker
Skinwalker

Skinwalker Four friends from the same university go out camping together. But while gathering firewood, strange sounds can be heard from the forest. After that, things get gradually worse. This is the classic camping-trip-gone-wrong movie from the eighties made into a RPG Maker game. It features a minimalistic soundtrack, with mainly the ambiance of the forest and all the creatures in it accompanying you in the increasingly dark forest. I recommend turning off all lights, pulling down the blinds and putting on headphones for maximum enjoyment. Playtime is roughly 20 minutes. Story is based upon the Skinwalker creature and the stories surrounding it.
